When iron and manganese are present in your water, please provide us with the concentration of iron and manganese (test results required). According to the World Health Organization (WHO) standards, the maximum allowable concentrations are iron ≤ 0.3mg/L and manganese ≤ 0.1mg/L.
If iron is <2.0mg/L and manganese is <2.0mg/L, aeration (using a blast pump or air compressor) is recommended. Adjust the pH if it is low, and use a single iron removal filter.
If iron is >=5.0mg/L and manganese is >=1.5mg/L, start with aeration and then use a double iron removal filter. The first filter removes iron, while the second filter removes manganese.
If iron is >=10.0mg/L and manganese is >=2.0mg/L, and the pH is >5.5, consult with an engineer to customize the design.

Aeration iron removal is currently the most mature and cost-effective method for removing iron and manganese. It involves building an aeration tank and using an aeration blower to oxidize ferrous iron in the water to ferric iron. After the ferric iron precipitates, it can be removed by a manganese sand filter. Finally, an activated carbon filter is used to remove color and meet the product water requirements.
