- This occurrence is due to the groundwater's high mineral content and its extended exposure to an anaerobic environment, resulting in the presence of divalent iron and manganese ions.
- Once these ions come into contact with air, they undergo oxidation, forming precipitates of ferric iron.

- WHO standard Iron and manganese standard:
- Iron ≤ 0.3mg/L
- Manganese ≤ 0.1mg/L
Flow Chart:
- When Iron < 2.0mg/L and Mn < 2.0mg/L:
- Aeration (use blast pump or air compressor)
- If pH is low, adjust pH
- Single iron remove filter
- When Iron ≥ 5mg/L and Mn ≥ 1.5mg/L:
- First aeration, then adopt double iron remove filter
- 1st remove iron, 2nd remove manganese
- When Iron ≥ 10mg/L and Mn ≥ 2mg/L:
- pH > 5.5 well water
- Need to discuss with engineer then customize the design

Aeration iron removal is currently the most mature and cost-effective method for removing iron and manganese.
