Iron and Manganese Removal from Well Water
Design Flow Chart Suggestion:
When you detect iron and manganese in your water, please provide us with the concentration of iron and manganese (as indicated by the test result).
- According to the World Health Organization (WHO) standards, the maximum allowable concentration of iron is 0.3mg/L, and for manganese, it is 0.1mg/L.
- If the iron concentration is below 2.0mg/L and the manganese concentration is below 2.0mg/L, you can use aeration (using a blast pump or air compressor) and adjust the pH if it is low. A single iron removal filter will suffice.
- If the iron concentration is equal to or greater than 5.0mg/L and the manganese concentration is equal to or greater than 1.5mg/L, start with aeration and then use a double iron removal filter. The first filter will remove iron, and the second filter will remove manganese.
- If the iron concentration is equal to or greater than 10.0mg/L and the manganese concentration is equal to or greater than 2.0mg/L, and the pH is above 5.5, you need to discuss with an engineer to customize the design for your well water.
- The recommended process is as follows: Add air → Aeration pond → Feed water pump → Iron removal filter → Manganese removal filter → Active carbon filter → Water softener → Bag filter → Purified water storage tank.
- Aeration iron removal is currently the most mature and cost-effective method for removing iron and manganese. It involves building an aeration tank and using an aeration blower to oxidize ferrous iron in the water to ferric iron. After the ferric iron is precipitated, it can be removed by a manganese sand filter. Finally, an activated carbon filter is used to remove color, ensuring the product water meets the required standards.
