Iron and Manganese Removal from Well Water

Design Flow Chart Suggestion:

When iron and manganese are present in the water, please provide us with the concentration of iron and manganese as indicated by the test results.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) standards, the acceptable levels for iron and manganese are as follows: iron ≤ 0.3mg/L, manganese ≤ 0.1mg/L.

• If iron < 2.0mg/L and manganese < 2.0mg/L, use aeration (with a blast pump or air compressor) and adjust the pH if it is low. Then, use a single iron removal filter.


• If iron ≥ 5.0mg/L and manganese ≥ 1.5mg/L, start with aeration and then use a double iron removal filter. The first filter removes iron, and the second one removes manganese.


• If iron ≥ 10.0mg/L and manganese ≥ 2.0mg/L, and the pH of the well water is > 5.5, please consult with our engineer to customize the design.

Aeration iron removal is currently the most mature and cost-effective method for removing iron and manganese. It involves building an aeration tank and using an aeration blower to convert ferrous iron into ferric iron. The ferric iron is then precipitated and removed using a manganese sand filter. Finally, an activated carbon filter is used to remove color and meet the product water requirements.
