When you drill a well and initially pump out the water, it may appear clear and clean, resembling tap water. However, if you let the water stand for a while or overnight, you may notice that its color becomes darker, turning yellow or brown and emitting a fishy smell.
This change occurs because groundwater is rich in minerals and has been in an anaerobic environment for an extended period. As a result, iron and manganese ions exist in a divalent form. When these ions come into contact with air, they undergo oxidation and form precipitates of ferric iron.

Design Flow Chart Suggestion
When you find iron and manganese in your water, please inform us of the concentration levels (test results required). The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the following standards: Iron ≤ 0.3mg/L and Manganese ≤ 0.1mg/L.
If Iron is less than 2.0mg/L and Manganese is less than 2.0mg/L, you can use aeration (with a blast pump or air compressor) and adjust the pH if it is low. A single iron removal filter is sufficient.
If Iron is equal to or greater than 5.0mg/L and Manganese is equal to or greater than 1.5mg/L, start with aeration and then use a double iron removal filter. The first filter removes iron, and the second filter removes manganese.
If Iron is equal to or greater than 10.0mg/L and Manganese is equal to or greater than 2.0mg/L, and the pH is above 5.5, it is recommended to discuss with an engineer for a customized design.

Aeration iron removal is currently the most mature and cost-effective method for removing iron and manganese. It involves building an aeration tank and using an aeration blower to oxidize ferrous iron in the water to ferric iron. After the ferric iron is precipitated, it can be removed by a manganese sand filter. Finally, an activated carbon filter is used to remove color and meet the required water quality standards.
